Cavities 101

Cavities, also known as dental caries, are basically holes in the teeth where bacteria grow and destroy the tooth’s enamel. Cavities are considered to be one of the most common diseases in the world, but they are easily preventable. At Muccioli Dental, we want to partner with you to promote optimal oral health – starting with the prevention of cavities.

Improper dental hygiene is the number one cause of cavities. Neglect of the teeth allows for damaging plaque to form on the teeth. Plaque buildup allows the process of demineralization to occur and this can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. While brushing helps to remove plaque from the surface of the teeth, neglecting to floss every day can lead to cavities between the teeth. Food particles become lodged between the teeth and attract bacteria. When food particles are not removed and bacteria multiply in number, they cause plaque to build up rapidly. Eating and drinking acidic foods and beverages also expose the teeth to acid and bacteria. An excessive amount of bacteria and sugars can cause damage to the enamel of the teeth and lead to cavities.

Cavities must be treated by a dentist in order to prevent further tooth decay and the spread of decay in the mouth. Fillings are the most common method of treatment for cavities. The dentist will drill away at the decayed part of the tooth and fill the hole with a substance to strengthen the tooth and prevent further decay.

Visiting the dentist twice a year for dental checkups and a professional teeth cleaning is incredibly important to promote optimal oral health. Brushing the teeth and flossing daily is also important to do between visits to keep the teeth as clean as possible. At Muccioli Dental we are here to partner with you in order for your smile to be radiant. Call us today for an appointment.
