Children and Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings that are painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Both children and adults are candidates for sealants, but parents of children are especially encouraged to have sealants put on their children’s teeth to help prevent cavities and tooth decay once their permanent molars come in.
Teeth are designed to last a lifetime and with proper care and oral hygiene, they can. Dental sealants are one way that parents can protect the teeth of their children. Once the first permanent molars come in, parents are encouraged to have sealants applied to these teeth. Sealants seal out harmful bacteria that can cause tooth decay. Because the back teeth are prone to deep groves and ridges that are hard to clean, dental sealants are designed to fill the area so that bacteria and food particles do not accumulate and damage the teeth. Grooves in the molars are narrow and children (as well as most adults) have a difficult time cleaning these areas with a toothbrush because it cannot fit into the spaces to remove damaging plaque.
Muccioli Dental is pleased to offer our young patients dental sealants in order to promote dental health. These sealants are painless for children and are quickly done in our office after a routine dental cleaning. Sealants keep 100% of germs and particles out of the grooves of the molars, and they are considered to be an important component of a comprehensive pediatric preventive care plan.
Muccioli Dental is accepting new patients, adults and children. We are a family dental practice, and we offer comprehensive dental care to all of our patients. Call today to schedule an appointment for your child to have sealants placed on his or her teeth.
