If your child is currently wearing braces, it is very important that he or she practices good oral hygiene for the duration of treatment. This includes brushing thoroughly at least twice daily and flossing thoroughly at least once daily. It is also vitally important that he or she visit the dentist at least every six months for a professional dental cleaning.
The reason that dental hygiene is so important for children (and adults) with braces is because if food gets stuck on the teeth around the braces, it can leave severe stains on the surfaces of the teeth. The last thing you want to do is pay thousands of dollars for orthodontic treatment and have your child end up with stained, unattractive teeth!
Most dentists recommend that children with braces brush their teeth for two minutes or more at a time, at least two times per day. This is a very long time, especially for a child. To make it easier, you may want to play your child’s favorite song or songs on an iPod or other type of device while they are brushing their teeth. Once the song or songs have ended, your child is free to stop. Just make sure that the music plays for at least two minutes.
Purchasing a Sonicare® or other brand of electronic toothbrush for your child may also be a good idea if your child wears braces. Lastly, you may want to take your child to the dentist more often than every six months for professional dental cleanings throughout the duration of their orthodontic treatment.
