Is Mouthwash Necessary?
You have been told all your life that you need to brush and floss your teeth, but have you ever been encouraged to use mouthwash? For many of us, the answer is no – simply because it is not necessary. Or is it? One walk down the dental health care aisle at your local drug store may have you asking whether or not you should be using mouthwash. Keep reading to find out if you should be doing a daily rinse or if you can skip it.
For those who floss their teeth every single day and brush their teeth at least twice a day, mouthwash is not a necessary step in their oral health care routine. Flossing and brushing keep your mouth as clean as possible between dental cleanings, but only when done on a daily basis. If you are an avid flosser and you do not skip out on brushing your teeth, then mouthwash is not necessary for your oral health.
However, if you do not floss daily and you occasionally skip out on brushing your teeth, it is probably a good idea to use a mouthwash for rinsing your mouth each day. There are millions of bacteria that live inside your mouth. These bacteria are present in your mouth to help break down food particles that are left behind after you eat and drink. As these bacteria do their “work,” they begin to produce acids in order to help the process go more effectively. It is these acids that wreak havoc on the mouth – causing cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease.
Mouthwash contains ingredients that kill the bacteria before they are able to do their damage. Mouthwash will not rinse plaque away from the teeth (only floss and dental scraping tools can do that), but it will kill the bacteria within the plaque. Any mouthwash that has the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of approval is guaranteed to contain ingredients that will prevent cavities and protect the gums from infection. By using a mouthwash on a daily basis, you can protect your teeth and gums, but it will not keep you from spending a little extra time in the dentist’s chair as your dentist scrapes layers upon layers of plaque away.
At Muccioli Dental, we want to partner with our patients in order to help them achieve and maintain a beautiful, healthy smile. While nothing can replace the value of flossing and brushing your teeth daily, mouthwash does benefit certain patients. We will be happy to recommend a great mouthwash, and we will be happy to give you a lesson in flossing so that it is an easy habit for you to start. Call today!
