Caring for Dental Implants

Dental Implant Care Johns Creek GA

It’s true; dental implants really are designed to last a lifetime. They are longer lasting, more durable and easier to care for compared to any other tooth replacement option available, including dentures. However, dental implants are not invincible. They must be properly cared for if you want to maximize your investment and benefit from life-long replacement teeth.

If you choose dental implants, you’ll never be burdened with messy dentures creams or have to avoid the foods you love, but it is recommended that you follow these simple rules to keep them looking and functioning best.

Clean Your Teeth and Gums
Maintain your brushing (twice a day) and flossing routine even when you have dental implants.  Although your dental implants are resistant to tooth decay, your remaining natural teeth and gums are still prone to bacteria. Neglecting to floss and brush your dental implants can result in gum disease, which may completely sabotage your new smile investment.

Use Your Teeth For Chewing Only
The strength and durability of your dental implants may surprise you – so much that you think you can open a plastic bottle or crunch ice with them. Just as these habits are bad for natural teeth, they also pose a risk to your dental implants. The prosthetic tooth attached to the titanium screws can chip or get damaged.

Keep Stain-Causing Foods and Drinks to a Minimum
You were probably delighted to hear that your dental implants are stain-resistant. This is absolutely true. However, they are not stain proof. It is still best to consume stain-causing foods and drinks at a minimum. Stains from food that are not immediately brushed or washed off can become permanent. Limit dark teas, coffee, soda, red wine and berries if possible.

Consider Using a Mouth Guard
Let’s face it – your dental implants are a big investment. If you actively engage in contact sport or other adventure activities, consider getting a custom mouth guard. It is a small price to pay to protect a smile that you have already replaced once before. In addition, those that have a teeth grinding habit can use a mouth guard to keep dental implants in top condition.

Visit your Dentist Regularly
Just because you don’t have a mouth full of real, natural teeth anymore does not mean you get a free pass to skip your dental checkups. Your dentist needs to examine the condition of your teeth and gums every six months and issue a professional cleaning.

What patients love most about dental implants is that they look and feel like natural teeth.  However, it is critical that we also remember to care for them like we would our own natural teeth – especially if we want them to last a lifetime.
